David Rizo is a regular student at John Sevier Middle School. When he takes the field, however, he is ready to take down his opponent. As a football player and wrestler, Rizo hits hard and fast.

Since his first year of playing football, Rizo knew football was his sport.

“I have fallen in love with the sport and getting to know my teammates,” he said.

Rizo plays two different positions for the team.

“On offense, I play right tackle which means that I defend the ball from the other team,” he said. “On defense, I play inside linebacker, where I back up the lineman.”

As most athletes know, a sports season can get tough.

“The discipline and learning how to move during a play is the hardest part,” Rizo said.

On contrast, there are many things Rizo loves about football.

“I think that the adrenaline rush is the best part,” he said.

Rizo has a busy schedule during his sports season, and juggling school work with athletic events can be a struggle.

“I try to do all of my work in class and tutoring before school in the morning,” he said.

Rizo’s favorite thing about playing football at Sevier is the bond that he makes with his teammates and his coaches. He describes his bond with his coaches as something of a parent-child relationship.

“Our relationship is good, but they will yell at you if you mess up,” he said. “They are very understanding and encouraging.”

The atmosphere of the team is good, too.

“Yeah, we do get made at each other and fight, but we always say ‘good night, love you’ on the group chat,” Rizo said.

Overall, Rizo has had good and bad moments as a football player. His best moment was learning everything he could during his first year playing football.

“I really liked learning more things about the sport than I already knew,” he said.

His worst moment was when Sevier took on Greenville Middle School.

“We don’t talk about that game,” he said. “I didn’t do well because I had to learn a new position on site of the game.”

Rizo’s parents support that he is playing sports.

“My parents like that I am playing sports because it keeps me active and it helps with my anger issues,” he said.

Rizo also has high hopes for his future.

“After high school, I either want to play in the National Football League or go into a psychology career,” he said.

Rizo believes that there are three key things to being a successful athlete.

“First, you need to have an open mind,” he said. “Secondly, taking advice from others is important. Lastly, you should always try to beat the person above you.”
